Of the many projects on our list, getting the house painted was high up there, for both making the house feel like ours and for the longevity of the siding and finishes. We decided to prioritize this for 2024 and set about finding a house painter and picking our colors.
The original blue was a lovely color, but felt a bit dated and did not really fit our aesthetic. I wanted something that fit the age and style of the house, felt appropriate for the general aesthetic of houses in Washington and fit my… darker aesthetic.

I mocked up some potential options in Photoshop and my husband and I compromised on a gray-green house color with near black green trim and plum accents.

I took the color selection very seriously. I knew that I needed to test the colors in different places around the house and in various lighting scenarios. I ended up creating custom colors to get just the right hue, saturation and value for the 3 color scheme.

We found our house painters on a Kitsap contractor page on a social media sight. The quote came in right about where I estimated, and they would also help us with some odds and ends; replacing the studio windows, fixing the rotted trims on the porch and bay window, and replacing fascia boards on the garage.
The project required lots of scraping and sanding, primer and caulking, removing and painting gutters and taking the lattice off the porch to paint the posts. The entire thing took a team about 3 weeks.

I’m so in love with how it turned out! I admit that the house color turned out a bit more beige than I had hoped, but it’s a lovely neutral that changes colors in different weather and times of day. The color shows best on overcast days, of which there are many in the PNW. In the warm light of a sunset, it can look pink, but mostly it reflects the greenness of the nature that surrounds it.
Our home has been transformed into the spooky farmhouse of our dreams.
